What is LYV in schools?
Lifting Young Voices is a choral music education programme, working across local primary schools (including Church of England, Roman Catholic and non-faith/community schools).
We aim to engage all children in the joy of choral singing and offer schools support in the delivery of a uniquely practical and highly engaging music curriculum, whilst embedding a strong culture of singing in these schools.
We open up new pathways for children to grow in their singing, both in school and in the wider community, as they progress into our LYV choirs, joining a community of young singers and developing a lifelong love of music.

How it all works
Children receive weekly choral sessions, which take place during the school day, led by our team of specialist choral trainers and professional singers.
Our Lifting Young Voices programme is tailored to the wishes and goals of individual schools. We work closely with the school’s leadership and offer a programme that is inclusive, responding to the needs of the cohort.
We offer a range of different choral sessions to help support this, including new lunchtime and after-school choirs, whole-school singing sessions, as well as curriculum sessions for particular year groups and classes.

Weekly choral sessions during the school day with classes and year groups of the school’s choosing, with our specialist choral trainers and professional singers.
A bespoke Lifting Young Voices Music Curriculum, which fulfils and exceeds the National Curriculum for Music, and tailored to the needs of the cohort.
Close collaboration with music leads to support your school’s music provision.
Good behaviour management allowing for classroom teachers’ PPA time.
Skill-sharing and access to LYV song libraries and music resources for teachers to use with children outside of choral sessions.
Termly schools’ concerts in local churches, bringing together all Lifting Young Voices schools. Further singing opportunities across South London are also being developed, including at Southwark Cathedral.
Opportunities for children to progress into local church choirs and after-school choirs.
Choir performances in school liturgies and other events in the school calendar.
Our Curriculum
Whilst our Lifting Young Voices Music Curriculum completely fulfils and exceeds the requirements of the National Curriculum for Music, our choral sessions may also supplement the music education of a school and the current music provision.
In each of our lessons, children learn musicianship skills, including the learning of music notation. They also learn to sing with good vocal technique under the guidance from our specialist choral trainers, developing their sound quality and controlling their voice with high proficiency. Children also explore historical contexts and themes of culture and faith through the varied repertory they sing, spanning both sacred and secular, traditional and modern, and songs from different cultures around the world.
In addition, elements of the Religious Education curriculum can be covered through some of the music taught.

Choral Opportunities
Through our network of schools and parishes, children of all backgrounds have opportunities to further their singing through LYV church choirs and LYV after-school choirs. We are proud to work across different schools and parishes, strengthening their working relationships and ties, and engaging the wider community.

Religious Education Support
Depending upon the nature and life of your school, Lifting Young Voices can support and enhance your Religious Education provisions through the linking of some of the music taught and the Christian Faith. For Ofsted, SIAMS, and CSI, we can also support collective worship and other provisions to enhance the existing collective life of the school

Funding
Lifting Young Voices currently works across 10 primary state schools and partner parishes, and is funded by the Diocese of Southwark, Cathedral Music Trust, The Ouseley Trust and the PCC of our partner churches, including the PCC of our hub church, All Saints Kingston.
We ask our primary schools to contribute around 35% of the costs, which equals £1500 per year. For this we are able to offer high-quality and inclusive choral sessions to children from all backgrounds.
We can provide advice and support on how this can be funded, following our experience of working with other local schools.
